How to use a Bag Valve Mask on an Adult:

Bag valve masks are recommended for 2 person CPR, but not for single rescuer. Single rescuers should use a pocket mask.

Ratio: Compressions to Breaths for Single Rescuers

  • Adults: 30:2
  • Children: 30:2
  • Infants: 30:2

Ratio: Compressions to Breaths for 2 Rescuer

  • Adults: 30:2
  • Children: 30:2
  • Infants: 30:2

Rescue Breathing

  • Adults: 1 breath every 5-6 seconds
  • Children: 1 breath every 5-6 seconds
  • Infants: 1 breath every 5-6 seconds
  • Advanced Airway: 1 breath every 6-8 seconds

Choking for Adult Victims

  1. Perform abdominal thrusts just above the navel in an upward motion.
  2. Continue until adult becomes unconscious or the object is removed.
  3. If they become unconscious, start adult CPR.

Choking for Infant Victims

  1. Perform 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts
  2. Continue until infant becomes unconscious or the object is removed.
  3. If they become unconscious, start infant CPR.
